Ready? Okay!

As someone who has been there, I can tell you there is no prouder moment in a father’s life than when your eldest son dresses in drag and proceeds to shake his booty in front of a large crowd of your friends and neighbors:

I should point out that the occasion was the annual Grissom High vs. Huntsville High Powderpuff football game conducted as a benefit for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. So, it was for a good cause that Number One dressed in a miniskirt and participated in a dance routine at halftime that made his old man blush and start looking around for a pair of sunglasses and a wig. Small consolation.

I asked myself several times: where did I go wrong? I mean I tried to play “body slam” and wrestle with him a lot when he was little. I made sure he had lots of toy trucks and even a few plastic guns even though some of my friends looked on in disapproval. I signed him up for soccer and baseball, and…then I remembered; the crossdressing gene was inherited from the other side of the family. I even have the evidence to prove it:

Turns out that in 1979, Eyegal was playing Powderpuff and dabbling a little “on the other side” too. Whew, what a relief; at least it wasn’t something I had any control over.

All jesting aside, I think Number One and his friends have a new appreciation for cheerleaders after a month’s worth of sore muscles and various bumps and bruises. All that hard work payed off though–they were quite good. Just how good? Well check out this short video of Number One’s moves and then this one of the halftime routine (Warning: this video has not yet been rated).

With Title IX and the rise of women’s participation in sports, one can’t be faulted for wondering if relics such as Powderpuff football are somewhat of an anachronism in the early 21st century. Well, go ahead and wonder, I say. This is Huntsville, Alabama, durn it, and we can be anachronistic if we want to! Besides, where else can a young man safely explore his “feminine side” without fear of ridicule or getting the snot beat out of him?

Ready? I suppose, but just this once–okay?

For the really curious, number one is on your left in the dance in the front next to the middle guy. In the stunt, number one is a top boy on your right. We are so proud!

This is really, really weird. I say that in a nice way. What have they done down there in Alabama?

It’s not just a Bama thing. If you click on the “Powderpuff football game” link, you’ll see that this is done all over the United States and Canada as well.

Probably not California, though. The crossdressing’s for real there.

Son 2 dressed up as a woman for all day at the annual dress up day at his high school. He was VERY cute. But it was still very, very weird.

And I say that in a nice way.

Hey, did you see my running post from yesterday? It might interest you…

Yeah, I agree it is a little wierd. There was something really good football out there last night, though. Huntsville won 18-12; their entire backfield was composed of state championship soccer players–speed to burn. The girls are supposed to simply “grab the flag,” but every now and then they forgot and just went ahead and took each other out. There were some really hard hits. That was wierd too.

I’ll check out the running post.

That half time show was the funniest thing I have seen in a long time! You can tell they actually worked at it!! Good stuff!

    Donna–

They worked overtime. The Huntsville cheerleaders were okay, but our guys smoked ’em.

Mike this is so good.  Thanks for the great video. I know you will never forget this.

Also, our number 2 daughter asked the question the other day about why girls didn’t have football team just like guys. She cannot wait to play in two years. She is already ready. I was a little thankful our Number 1 couldn’t play but wouldn’t want anyone to go through surgery to not get to play. She said a couple people couldn’t understand why she couldn’t play flag football it was a non contact sport. She told them obviously you havn’t witnessed it. Thanks again. May was just laughing and doing the cheer. My girls loved it. Hate we didn’t win either game but our cheerleaders last night were the best even over ours tonight. Sorry they just were not getting the crowd into it tonight and parents were having to start the cheers. Anyway, youall have a great week. We are headed to the beach and our number one is in mexico ( or will be in about 2 hours).

    LP–

I did a little “editing” of your comment since you apparently didn’t mean for all of that to be seen!

I had trouble seeing the “mooning.” Maybe I need to find an eye doctor.
