Shula Fired. Bama Jet Bound for Austin?
It’s official. The Tuscaloosa News is reporting that Mike Shula is out.
Furthermore, rumors are running rampant that Paul Bryant Jr.’s jet is reportedly bound for Austin, Texas.
Could this mean that Bama has made a play for Mack Brown?
Now that I’ve done my share to stir up rumors, let’s sit back and see what actually happens.

I still think it’s wrong to fire a coach that only had 2 losses last year. The coach is not the one running the plays or missing blocks.

I’ve heard all kinds of rumors, none of which seem likely (Houston Nutt, Nick Saban, and someone else that escapes me now). Mack Brown is interesting. I’d think the pressure in Texas might make one want to leave, but why leave for another high-pressure environment? On the other hand, if the check is bigger, you might as well go.
Shula never seemed like he was really accepted, and last season looks like it was an exception rather than the norm. I’ve heard rumors he would be there for another year, but I was actually surprised it took this long after the Auburn game. I expected it almost immediately.

Terri–
Are you sure you don’t have a vested interest in keeping Shula around another year? 😉
Greg–
My understanding of various reports is that President Witt gave AD Mal Moore one week to find a new coach. If they managed to secure an elite coach, then Shula was gone. If not, then there would have been major personnel changes and Shula would have been granted another year.
So, maybe they already someone big in hand. Maybe not.
JRB
Yep. It’s Ty Willingham. You just watch.

My mom is a big proponent of David Cutcliff, who is a righteous choice, but would UA really chose an Ole Miss reject and a UT assistant, even for the good of the program?
More importantly, is this sending No. 1 Son into more crises of college selection? This should play right into HU’s hands, especially if you get him to an HU home basketball game straight away.

I think Schula was doing a fine job, it takes time to rebuild a program. If Bama wants Mack, they can have him, warning…he whines A LOT!
Go Red Raiders!

Ty Willingham–you heard it here first folks! 🙂
It will be interesting to see how this effects Bama’s recruitment of Number One. A less-than-stellar move by Mal Moore may send him Bison way. So much at stake–the Crimson Nation waits with bated breath.
Hoots–
But if Mack comes our way, that would make two Church of Christ coaches at both Auburn and Bama!
That might put God in a real fix having to choose sides like that.

The vicious cycle continues. Didn’t hear Steve Spurrier’s name mentioned.
JRB
Ed, you haven’t been listening…..
Mike the Eyeguy
Ed, I mentioned Spurrier’s name in a previous post. Out of all the names being bandied about, his seems to be the most mentioned today, including figures of 10 years, 30 million.
Spurrier in 10 years at age 71? Hey if Joe Pa can do it, maybe he can too.
I wonder how long it would take the houndstooth visors to hit the market? I say two weeks tops.
Donna
It will almost take someone like Spurrier who doesn’t plan to have a much longer career. I mean after 4 years you can get fired and still get $4 mill? Somebody humiliate me with that deal!!
Mike the Eyeguy
Exactly. No need to cry a river for Shula. Four million is some serious severance.
Ed
JRB/Mike, you are correct. I ‘ve been flipping around so many forums and blogs that I lost track 😮
Terri
Yeah, you caught me – I was just trying to be nice… what say they get rid of Mal Moore!!!
Mike the Eyeguy
Ed–
My sitemeter has been singing today. Little do they know that I’m just another rumor trafficker.
Terri–
You and your War Eagle self are so busted! Yeah, many a Bama fan too would like to can Moore as well.
