Three Things I’m Trying to Figure Out

Here are three things I’m trying to figure out:

  1. Why schools are giving so much homework these days (Allison, who really wants to be a Tar Heel anyway?)
  2. Why a high school student would actually like homework (Jennifer dear, get a life)
  3. What’s causing all those thumping noises in my house at 3:00am (Get in Bed! NOW!)

After I get a grip on these, I’ll start on how spending $32 million on a football coach will improve the the quality of academics at the University of Alabama (there may be more to that answer than meets the eye).

Good questions. We recently enrolled my number-one-daughter in our local public high school over an issue with the amount of homework she had at the private Christian school that she attended. She was routinely coming home with 4-6 hours of homework every night – worthless homework that was just busy work. It has been quite a good move for her. Not only has her homework drastically decreased, but she has met many new friends and has more time to attend youth group events at church, and has become active in Young Life. She also has time to interact with the family instead of slumping off to her room to slog it out with her giant book bag. We hope to even get her a part-time job soon. I think there is much more to an education than what “Jennifer dear” describes in your link above. In fact, it wouldn’t surprise me to find out that Jeniffer’s favorite college choices didn’t reject her because she doesn’t have a life outside her books.

Hal, haven’t you heard? More is better. Always. Don’t even bother to question that maxim of success or you’ll be shouted down.

More money, more days of school, more hours of homework. Mix it all together, and you have the some of the leading science and math students in the world.

    Oh wait, never mind.

My wife teaches school and our daughter has had her as a teacher several years in elementary school. Third grade was especially homework-laden and Jessica had her mom again. I tried talking with my wife about the amount of homework being far too much, but to no avail. So I went to the principal and complained … about my wife! But the homework load never lightened the least bit.

Wow. I bet she’s got tenure and is a member of the teacher’s union to boot.
